Subspace; The Menace Within

I was checking out SSForums and just read the thread of the year. Smong has posted a link to the 1999 report on Children, Violence and the Media from the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, chairman Senator Orrin G. Hatch. It includes this juicy little snippet:

" ... Equally troubling, video games often present violence in a glamorized light. Typical games cast players in the role of a shooter, with points scored for each "kill." Furthermore, advertising for such games often touts the violent conduct as a selling point--the more graphic and extreme, the better. For example, the advertisement for the game "Destrega" reads: "Let the slaughter begin"; and for the game "Subspace," "Meet people from all over the world, then kill them." As the popularity and graphic nature of such games increase, so does the harm to our youth. As Lt. Col. Dave Grossman bluntly warns, "We're not just teaching kids to kill. We're teaching them to like it."

Well that explains a lot. So VIE didn't pull out due to disappointing sales. The real reason is that they didn't want to be responsible for inciting mass slaughter and the reason there has been no recent Continuum updates has nothing to do with the fact PriitK is taking a two year break to count all his Skype money, but has everything to do with another upgrade to Cont's graphics causing a worldwide apocalypse. Incedently, I just did a Google search for "Lt. Co. Dave Grossman" and "America's Army". Seems Colonel Dave is suspiciously quiet about that one.

Perhaps I'm being a little hasty though. Maybe it's only the tagline that has made the committee view Subspace as a greater threat than Al Qaeda. If we came up with a new one the world might be safe once again. how about:

"Subspace on a plane and there's not a Goddamn thing you can do about it."

No? Oh well. If you really want to you can read the full report here and can find the thread on the SSForums about it here.
